WHEW! What a week!
What a week for the RAINIERS, as well. It started off dismally with back to back losses to Las Vegas (0-4 and 8-10 following their opening win (9-2) on Saturday. So, to even up the series, the Rainierspulled out the final game in a Tuesday win 6-3. On the road Wednesday brought them to their next four-game series in Sacramento. They took the opener against the River Cats Thursday 6-4 then Friday night Sacramento turned the tide witha 3-2 victory against Ryan Rowland Smith and the Rainiers. Two more games are scheduled in Sacto. Then Monday night, you can catch the boys in a televised game at the Portland Beavers. That’s Monday at 7pm on the Fox Sports Net instead of the Mariners who’ll have Monday night off. And in case you are interested, the current weekend series against Sacramento is available on On Demand TV.
Our friend, buddy, love-interest the WEATHERMAN is staying in our good graces with a forecast calling for partly cloudy skies and temps in the mid ’70’s…darned near perfection! I don’t even see any showers in his forecast until next Friday. Could this be the same guy who called for such an elongated season of crud, this last winter? Well, of course it was his fault! But he gets the credit now and we’re lovin’ the guy!
Hey! The sale is Saturday (6/13) at the U.P. Library. Books and stuff, 10am to 4pm. The Library uses the proceeds for their special activity programs and I understand some good deals are to be found!
What an amazing group of kids we have here in U.P. I mean to say that we were so very impressed with the hundreds of Kindergarten-through- fourth graders who participated in the Design Day for the new Playground By The Sound (PBTS)on Thursday. Designers went to all of our Elementary schools that morning to host back-to-back sessions of students, many of whom came armed with their prepared artistic renderings representing their input, their ideas for the new playground and before the day was over, our professional designer from Ithaca, New York had combined the oft-repeated highlights into an amazing design for the new playground. My personal experience was at Chambers Elementary where they students were not only interested but well behaved, attentive, enthusiastic and communicative (By the way, why do little kids whisper? I swear they’re afraid to speak up.)…they represented their imaginative ideas clearly. They had been given more than a fair degree of thought. Kudos to the teachers, parents, principals and everyone involved in making sure our youngsters had their say in this future project in their community. The steering committee behind the PBTSwas in a bit of a dawn-to-dust mode that day and many found out how exhausting the effort was going to be. OK, I’ll admit, I was whipped after two hours of intense sessions withthe kids. But the final design was well worth it. So, what’s next? Well over $100,000 still needs to be raised to make this all happen next Spring. Personalized fence pickets are being sold, donations being rustled up and much more planing and execution is underway. Additional volunteers are needed in support of a wide variety of preparatory activities as well as the multi-day build. Interested? Well, the easiest way to get involved is to respond to this blog. That’s right. Just reply withyour comment telling us who you are and how we can reach you and we’ll follow up. It’s a huge undertaking but the payoff will be well worthit. And by the way, it’s a rather green project, as well, using recycled materials throughout the structure. We’ll continue to keep you posted as this wonderful community building project unfolds but now IS the time for you to get involved in what is actually amounting to a lot of fun with some very, very good people!
Something is eating the garden! No, it’s not slugs. My wife is a notorious slug murderer. She’s got that well covered. It’s something bigger. Yes, we have a population of squirrels in our yard roughly equal to the population of India but I’m pretty sure it’s not those bushy tailed critters unless they can use a chain saw. Whatever it is, it’s much bigger. It just took down two corn stalks! See what I mean about bigger. I suspect rabbits. I don’t see dogs or cats interested in chewing up the dahlias and gnawing at corn stalks until they surrender. So, it was off to my local wharehouse store to wander through their aisle of repellants. And repellants is a polite word. They have concoctions of destruction and fear suitable for everything from cockroaches to deer! They’ve got powders that promise to eradicate aphids. They’ve got stuff that will strike terror into the heart of any skunk. They’ve got… They’ve goteverything. Everything, that is, except what I went looking for. I was lectured the other night that what I really needed was (Oh, you’re gonna love this!) concentrated, dried coyote urine. ( You just can’t make stuff like that up. ) And the guy who told me about it, swears by it. (Who gathers this stuff? I thought I’ve had bad jobs!) He promises me that it not only drove out all of the neighborhood pets but it also made his yard totally free of mice, squirrels, rabbits, racoons, possums and apparently it even drove off his first wife! “Wow!”, I thought, “That IS good stuff!” So, I went looking for it only to be told that the only place they knew that carried it was the good old Duffle Bag, which, of course, closed it’s doors forever, last year.
So, I left the mega-box store with a bag of fertilizer. I know, I know… I went looking for repellant. Well, apparently, it is. I had a bag of something called blood meal. What is blood meal? I can’t really tell you other than to say that it’s made from animal blood and other animals apparently hate the stuff and they stay away. The package states, multiple times, that mine is not from cows but does it ever tell you what it’s from? Nope. ( Unless, well, does “porcine” mean pig? ) Meanwhile it supposedly replenishes the necessary supply of nitrogen in the soil. Then, if you stop by, what I call, the “Big Cheap Store” and you buy a container of Cayenne Pepper… we’re talking more Cayenne than you would ever use in one kitchen in your entire lifetime, but what they heck, it only cost a buck! You get home, mix the Cayenne into the Blood Meal and then go sprinkle it around your garden, supposedly, the critters are gone for at least a month! They damned sure better be gone because the guy who told me about it was right. My wife is also gone. Apparently, no matter how much hot water and soap you use, the rather offensive stench of blood meal does not come out of your hands no matter what. The last I saw my wife, she was muttering something about the guest room or the RV. So, I would advise anyone wanting to apply the above concoction to try a disposable plastic glove. Unless of course you actually want…. Oh, never mind. I’ll let you know if the offending critter returns. No, I don’t mean my wife!
Speaking of good people, the candidate statementsare rolling in. You’ll recall that after the close of election filing, I invited the candidates for City Council, to submit up to a 250 word campaign statement and photo by next Wednesday (6/17) and we’ll run them for you to examine, soon after. Several of our candidates have done so and I look forward to getting those in front of you in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Have you seen the concentration of work going on at the new town center, lately? While construction continues on several facets of the project, the contractor has been scrambling to complete the area which will be called MARKET SQUAREin front of the New City Hall and Library. A state grant is funding the near $1M project and it’s designed to serve as a public plaza, outdoor multi-use area for events throughout the year. Now, while it won’t be open for daily use this summer as it’s still in the heart of a major construction area, a dedication event is fast approaching. When the project is about complete the city will announce it’s plans. The center really is set aside as the heart of the overall project and it contains not only the site and setting for the city Christmas tree but it’s got a children’s spray fountain for summer fun, as well. Trees, lawn, fire pit…the design is quite varied and if similar “central park spaces” in other recent city developments across the country should tell us anything, it’s bound to be a well used area. One of my favorites is the one in the Denver area surrounded by retail, restaurants and second story offices. It features a lawn and stage for open-air performances and I watched it in use last August while we dined in an open-front restaurant while a live band entertained from not a half-block away and hundreds of “picnickers” feasted on their casual meals on the grass while enjoying the show. What a sense of connected community! What a cool idea and, in reality, how very, very practical. Our Market Square will be unique in itself and we’ll learn how best to make it come to life all in good time. But the word is, it will soon be finished and dedicated. We’ll let you know.
As the last week of school is upon us, so to is FLAG DAY, this Sunday 6/14. Remember all of the campaign “bull” about Barack Obama not pledging allegiance? Well, here’s a good way to put that all to bed. On Thursday, President Obama officially declared Sunday to be Flag Day and the week following to be Flag Week during which he directed the displaying of the flag on all federal government buildings and he urged all of us to observe the day and week by flying our colors at home and other suitable places and by publicly reciting the pledge of allegiance. Do you have your colors up? Do your children understand what it’s all about? Should we leave that lesson to the schools? No! Where should our youngsters learn what it means to be an American? With their teacher or with Mom and Dad? Here’s a good opportunity to explain another facet of what it all means. A good Flag Day and Flag Week to you and yours!
SALE OF THE DAY: In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place here’s another recently sold U.P. home with details from public information. SOLD: 5421 89th Ct West. After 389 days on the market, this nice tri-level home featuring 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2,168 square feet on almost a half acre lot is now sold. Three different REALTORS handled the home for over a year and finally, the asking price got reasonable and low and behold, there was the buyer! It wasn’t that the first two agents weren’t any good. Nor was it that they weren’t doing what it took to sell the home. The price was too high! It was really that simple. They started at $375K and finally, when they price got to $339K, they accepted an offer of $324K and it was done. But when it sells at $324k you’ve got to know that $375K was a waste of everyone’s time.
Well, let’s get out there and enjoy. Yeah, I know, it might be “enjoying” the yard work or it might be “enjoying” painting the house or it might … whatever… it’s outside, it’s great out there and we’re not depressed and complaining ’cause it’s wet and gloomy. Plus I just noticed last night that I’ve got red strawberries in the garden! I love summer! See you Monday.
