Friday 7/10

NOTE TO READERS:  The online software we use to create and post this blog was having problems Friday morning when this went up and it’s just now, Saturday morning, working as it should.  Let’s try this again.

2LN0CAGH7YMFCAB7BROHCA35WCUMCASH4E4BCAFAYZ1BCA9QIYOLCA7ERQHJCACXB41JCAKDIWVWCACLPT1ZCAZCQN17CA2NBUKKCA2PL0S5CAVWCQ43CAE856TFCAME95X7CA0UI5NRCA5OLRBPCA3N7CV2Fires in U.P.  How tragic!  The recent apartment fire and then the home fire this week are catching everyone’s attention. About two dozen residents were left homeless from the apartment fire and it appears as if they’ve located at least two victims in the remains of this week’s home fire.

The Portland Beavers visit to Cheney stadium this week has been a 50/50 affair, so far. Wednesday night the RAINIERS lost the opener 1-7 but bounced back Thursday with a 5-3 win. Two more tests against Portland are scheduled for 7pm tonight and again Saturday night. The final home game before the all-star break will be a 1:30 Sunday afternoon game, again, against the Beavers.

What’s this I heard about Yuniesky Betencourtshowing up in a Rainiers uniform this week? Yup, there he was at second base, of all places, Wednesday night. He did not play Thursday and we’ll see where he shows up tonight…second? short? bench? Seattle? Pittsburg? Huh? Coming off the rehab roster following a hammie pull last month, Betencourt’s real issue is a possible trade which might be immanent. Could Yuni be a Pirate within the next week or so? Keep your ears open.

I can handle 80 degrees today, about 83 tomorrow and a little precip on Sunday with temperatures back down to the mid-low 70s then as well as Monday and Tuesday. The WEATHERMAN warns of some more possible rain mid-week.

CAMP U-PLAYwraps up another successful week today and begins anew on Monday. To register your 5-12 year olds for part of the 10-week long day camp program, call the rec office at 460-2530.

For the seniors, there’s a BBQ planned for Wednesday (7/15) from 5 – 8pm at the Senior Center and it’s free.

The next First Aid and CPR Class is scheduled for Saturday August 15th from 9am to 5pm but you should consider registering now by calling 564-1623.

I know there are a few addicts in our readership. (What?) Garage Sale addicts, that is. August 8th should have a big circle around it on your calendar. From 9am to 4pm at Cirque Park, that day, is the big City-Wide Garage Sale. (Oh, I can hear the nervous twitching already.) It’s an event to benefit the Volunteer Center and that’s who you need to contact to secure your own booth. Last year, there were more than 50 vendors at the event. a 10 X 10 booth runs $35 if you register by July 17th or $50 after that.  223-0039 will get you Julie Kerrigan from the Volunteer Center and she’ll get you in.

SALE OF THE DAY: In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place here’s another recently sold U.P. home with details from public information. SOLD: 4713 82nd Ave Ct W. They brought it on at a reasonable price for the market, $249K but the market didn’t move. So, they dropped it to29034773$237K  and got an offer. They settled at $233K for this 3-bed, 2-bath, 1,326 sq ft home built in 1990. Only 72 days from start to finish for this Westwood Gardens home. In a market where so many homes first appear for sale at a price far above what they eventually sell for. Why was this one pretty well priced and then adjusted to catch a sale in a timely manner? Two words explain it all: Bank Owned. Banks don’t want to own homes. After they foreclosed on this one, they got accurate assessments of it’s true market value, put it on the market and adjusted that price quickly so as to get it sold fast. Every day a bank owns a foreclosed home it’s losing money. They normally sell for exactly what the market will bear. They are not a steal and they are not overpriced. Again, they are in line with the CURRENT fair market value. Period.

Here’s hoping you have a great weekend. I’ll catch you again first of the week and if you have ideas, topics or issues for the blog, most anything effecting University Place, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line. You won’t be ignored.

Be well!

late showersHe was finally correct, the WEATHERMAN, that is.  Nobody’s out back building a boat but it is nice to have  a little rain to freshen things up.  OK,  so we tied the record.  29 days without measurable precipitation. Actually, for around here that’s not a record. It’s a miracle. In fact, it’s kind of a St. Jude style of miracle, come to think of it. BUT… he’s calling for…the Weatherman, not St Jude…  he’s calling for PM Showers both Friday and Saturday.  That’s a pretty safe bet wouldn’t you say?  I mean, “PM Showers” means it’s gonna rain somewhere between noon and midnight.  Really stickin’ his neck out on that one, huh? 30-40% chance of those late showers each day with temps in the mid ’60’s.  But then on Father’s Day…  We should have expected this.   A month of no rain and then Dad’s Day,  it’s Showers!  65 degrees is the call for Sunday.  Next week, however, it’s to be partly cloudy all the way into the following weekend with temps climbing through the ’70’s as the week progresses and we should hit about 80 NEXT Sunday.  ( Shhhhh, I’m not talking about weather and July 4th in the same sentence. I don’t want to jinx it! )  Now, having said all of that, there is a difference of opinion between weather forecasting agencies. Some think this Sunday’s rain will taper off through Wednesday while others think Sunday will wrap it.  We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Didja know… Taste of Tacoma is right around the corner?  June 26, 27 & 28 at Pt. Defiance Park featuring dozens of local restaurants, artisans, crafts, kids activities, live music and fun.  Admission is free.

Yes. It’s still FLAG WEEK.  Wear it, fly it, show it…respectably and proudly and you’ve got the spirit of the week.  If someone happens to ask “When is Flag Week over? So, I can take it down.”  I probably won’t even answer.

If your tastes run a bit more Celtic, the Tacoma Highland Games are set for June 27th at Frontier Park in Graham from 8am to 4:30pm.  I have friends who won’t miss it but I do. Something about hairy guys in kilts.

Since we’re looking out and around at what’s over the horizon…

If  you’re into Dixieland Jazz, the Greater Olympia Dixieland Jazz Festival is happening 6/25 through 6/28. Check out the details at http://www.olyjazz.com/

Aug 14 – Emerald Downs Wiener Dog Races (You can’t make this stuff up!)

Aug 20 – U.P. Concerts in the Park:  Maia Santell and Houseblend, blues & jazz  music at the Curran Apple Orchard Park from 6:30 – 8pm.

Didja know that right here in U.P. the WINE BANK at 7017 27th St is hosting complimentary wine tastings Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30pm?    www.winebankup.com   This Saturday, they are tasting five wines just perfect to accompany your summer BBQ. (I’m personally looking forward to the Sobon Old Vine Zin from Amador County! )

Of course the RAINIERS have been at it this week. They are barely hanging on to a winning record after two consecutive losses (34 -33) this week. Wednesday night, the final game down in Portland was a 3-5 loss then Thursday night they opened at Cheney Stadium against the Reno Aces with a 5-9 defeat. They’ve got Reno again tonight at 7pm (FIREWORKS!) and at 7pm Saturday. Then Sunday it’s an afternoon 1:30 start if the weather holds out, as they finish their series against Reno.

Next week the day camps and sports programs kick off in U.P. and rather than list them all here, which we have already done, check out the details and registration information at the UP City website (There it is down there in the lower right hand corner of the page).

SALE OF THE DAY: In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place here’s another recently sold U.P. home with details from public information. SOLD: 7902 65th Ave Ct W….I LOVE IT!  A perfectly priced home!  They entered the market at $340K and left the market only 15 days later, at $340K.  Perfect! Very clean home, 2,300 sq ft 2-story with 4-beds andhouse3-baths built in 1986 in University Ridge off of Chambers Road.  There were some extras here. It’s at the end of a dead end road or cul-de-sac or whatever you want to call it but it IS a desirable feature and it looks down over the Chambers Creek gulch, also desirable.  Now, for those of you that might conclude that it sold because it was UNDER priced???   Nope.  Quite frankly, in the U.P. School District, if the home is in good shape and it’s family sized and it’s under priced…it will go immediately.  This one took just over two weeks which tells me it was the perfect price.  Had they tried for a higher price, it would have done exactly what other U.P. homes are doing right now, it would languish on the market until it was seen as “damaged” goods and then it would eventually end up selling for less than it should have in the first place, had it been appropriately priced.  This home sale is the other side of that coin. Perfect,  just perfect!

I was doing some other real estate work today. That makes it just like every other day in my life but today I was reviewing the current pricing on million dollar, new construction homes in Gig Harbor’s Canterwood and I reminded myself of the 9,800 square foot home for sale there right now (And likely for some time to come).  That’s right. It’s no typo.  9,800 square feet.   My issue is this: WHO in the world requires that?!?  I live in a crazy-big house (Over 4,000 sq ft) but it’s less than half of that monster.  If I told my wife we were moving to an almost 10,000 square foot home she would throw something at me and yell, “Fine! You clean it!”  I don’t even know what you DO with that big of a home.  And you know what?  I’m not going to go see it because I don’t want to know!  I’m afraid I might walk through it and it might make sense to me. Then I would be really concerned…for my mental health!  But if anyone is serious about that size of a home, I would be more than happy to show it to them. I believe it’s listed at a mere $1.7M.  (If I didn’t type that paragraph very well it’s because I can’t stop laughing! 9,800 square feet…you’ve gotta be kidding!)  But frankly, I should note that there are real “Mansions” out there that do boggle the mind….gates

And back in the real world, if you can’t find something to do around here over this next week or so, as the old First Sergeant used to say, “Yain’t tryin'”.   Have a great weekend and HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all of you Dads. See you again on Monday.  Be Well.

I’m afraid it’s time to pay for all of those warm sunny days we’ve been enjoying but what the heck. In Eastern Washington they’ll probably just keep having the sunny days and high temps. Yet, on this side of the hill, we’ll put up with a little rain and the “terrible task” of enjoying what it’s REALLY like to live in the EVERGREEN STATE!  The WEATHERMAN says, a bit above or very near 70 degrees through Sunday but wet several days.  He’s not predicting a bunch of downpours but enough for the kids to claim it’s video game time.  Then next week, it’s a bit better.  Still some showers in the forecast, depending upon who you listen to, but it does still look a bit damp on a couple of days next week.   So, we cut down on our water bill a little in terms of the lawn and gardens, this week,  as we let Mom handle the watering duties.  “Mom”?  Yep. Mother Nature. She does it more efficiently than we do anyway.

americanflag

Yes. It certainly is Flag Week.  Are you proudly displaying your colors?  Maybe it’s a flag pole at or on your home?  Maybe a nice t-shirt with a flag appropriately displayed on it. Maybe it’s a lapel pin on your suit.  Perhaps it’s good looking flag bumper sticker. I don’t care. Do it how you want to. Do it appropriately and with respect but just do it!

REMEMBER:  The U.P. Fire Department is the place for this Saturday’s FIRST AID and CPR Class.   It’s only offered six times annually. So, now is the time to get registered.  Again, it’s this Saturday 6/20 from 9am to 5pm. The cost is only $30 and to register I would contact them TODAY at 564-1623.

Wasn’t that a kick to sit back and enjoy watching the RAINIERS taking on the Portland Beavers live on FSN TV Monday night?  And an 11-2 win?!?  Holy smokes!  Then, Tuesday another win in the river city for the boys from T-town, 7-5 and tonight it’s “Ryan the Aussie”on the mound for the Rainiers. We’ll see if he’s really rehabbing and maybe they can sweep the Beavs.  I wasn’t complaining about returning to Mariners game broadcasts last night, though.  Felix proved he is about the best in MLB at least against the Padres. By they way, the M’s  are edging back toward 500 ball and might just leave California with an even record. (Sorry for diverting there…I get carried away during baseball season!)

Another Reminder:  A lot gets started in U.P. Monday 6/22 with school ending this Friday.  (Ahh, the familiar sound of shrieking Mothers in the background.)   Many of the Parks & Rec programs begin next week and you can check them all out at the city website (lower right corner of this page).  CAMP UPLAY kicks off  Monday for the 5-12 year olds. It’s a series of week long summer day camps and each week they offer something different.  Mom, Dad…if it were me, I wouldn’t wait any longer to get “You know who” registered for any of the weeks.  Call Parks & Rec at 460-2530.

Friday is the last day of school in U.P.  Several other schools around us are already out. So, now is the time to remind you to DRIVE SAFELY.  Kids out playing, riding their bikes or scooters or skateboards or wheelies or whatever…well, they do stupid stuff.  They’re supposed to. They’re kids.  We, on the other hand are supposed to do the smart stuff AND look out for the kids, at the same time.  I cannot fathom a worse recipe than to run into a youngster who is out doing stupid stuff but really just playing his summer vacation away, when you hit him with your car.  There’s a GREAT excuse NOT to text or pay attention to ANYTHING other than what’s OUTSIDE of the car.  This is University Place and we have a LOT of youngsters running around, here.  PLEASE  watch out for our little ones.

Perhaps you can help me on a personal matter.  I have a Father’s Day dilemma.  You see, a few summers back I was rebuilding my deck rails and I had borrowed my son-in-law’s nail gun and compressor. Ooooh baby was I ever ready to knock that project out. Well, I had a bit of a delayed start as the first nail I fired didn’t quit make it to the target.  I did, however, enjoy the company of some very nice medical professionals in the emergency room that afternoon as they determined the least damaging way to remove the nail which was buried deep into and through two fingers on my left hand.  So, I figured out what the problem was and with a bandaged left hand I proceeded to power nail the deck rails together.  As the old Dire Straits song says, “That ain’t workin’. That’s the way ya do it!”  And I became hooked. Nail gun for me, baby!  Except, you see, ever since, my family has been firm about “Dad not getting a nail gun as he’s a danger to himself and probably others”.  OK now, this is where the dilemma comes in.  I just stumbled onto the ULTIMATE  “Tool Toy”.  That is to say, I’ve found a tool that’s so much fun it should be called a toy.  You’ll recognize the framework of an M-16, I assume.  Now you understand how it’s the ultimate nail gun.  We’re talking semi or fully automatic!  This puppy will drive a 16-D nail through a 2X4 at 200 yards!  I mean you can sit in your lawn chair sippin’ a cold one and build a fence!  Just have your wife hold the fence boards in place and POW!  After all, isn’t she the one who’s always pleading, “Let’s do more things TOGETHER.”  Yeah baby, this is it!  And there’s an added benefit, too.  I figure that with a 100 round magazine, after a day of fence building, your wife will never give you another “Honey Do” project as long as you live!   But here’s the problem.    My family has been after me, “C’mon Dad. What do you want for Father’s Day?”  Well, now I KNOW what I want but I can’t figure out how to ask for it. You see my wife still has photos of my two fingers nailed together.  I need help. There’s got to be a way!Nail Gun

                                                                     HAPPY FATHER’S DAY?

SALE OF THE DAY: In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place here’s another recently sold U.P. home with details from public information.  SOLD:  5609 96th Avenue Court West  A nice, 1984 3-bed, 2.5-bath home in Grandview Park, certainly within an easy stroll of the 96thproperties at Chambers Bay and all they offer.  This was just a perfectly priced home for it’s location, age, condition, etc.  They listed it at $333,500 and 15 days later they had it sold for $325K.  In this market, that’s perfect!  What might surprise is that it’s only 1,835 square feet.  It has some wear and tear on it. It needs new carpeting but they accounted for all of that with the dollar sign. Again, it was very appropriately priced and so it defied the slow market and earned a good, rapid sale.  We often have a tendency to want to “just try” for that higher price and while I don’t blame anyone for trying, if we leave it at a higher, unproductive price for long at all it becomes viewed by buyers and REALTORS alike as “damaged goods”.  So, pricing it right to begin with can make all the difference!  It certainly did with this one.

Speaking of homes, it’s time for me to get back to it.  Be well and I’ll catch you again as we prepare for the weekend.

As of the Presidential declaration on Thursday this now becomes FLAG WEEK  2009. In doing so, the President asked us all to appropriately display our colors with respect and honor. Can you think of a way to do your part this week and by the way, if you can this week, well, then maybe you can keep ’em flying beyond just Flag Week. Whatcha think? And speaking of doing so appropriately, do you remember what’s right and what’s wrong in terms of the display of our national symbol?  How about a little test to check your knowledge? A bit of  “RIGHT vs WRONG”…

So, did you pass the test?  Have you thought of a good way YOU can display your colors this week?  And if you have, why just THIS week?  Happy Flag Week !

If the weather is going to change it looks like it will be this week and what’s this about a record?  If I got it right, it was back in 1982 when we had 29 consecutive days of no measurable rain….HERE?!?  But we are apparently rapidly approaching that number again.  Our recent hero, the WEATHERMAN, says we’ll come up just a couple of days short as he expects the rain to return by Thursday with partly cloudy days at or just above 70 degrees between here and there.  Then it’s off to a wet weekend. We remember those.  Hey. No room to complain.  It’s been a great run and those of us whose bottles are still half FULL are sure the good weather is returning soon!

They opened with a win then followed with three straight losses. That was the fate of the RAINIERS versus Sacramento this weekend but CHEER UP!  Your Tacoma Rainiers are on TV tonight at 7pm from Portland!  Yep, the Mariners have a night off (They need it!).  So, we’ve got Tacoma taking on the Beavers down south, live on FSN as they begin a three game stand in Portland  before welcoming Reno here this  Thursday night.

The U.P.

SALE OF THE DAY: In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place here’s another recently sold U.P. home with details from public information.  SOLD: 6408 86th Ave W, a brand new Zetterberg home in Chambers Plateau.  The 543 days on the market is a somewhat misleading statistic in that I’m pretty sure this was actively listed during it’s construction, if not before.  But the tale is told inzettterms of what price they started at and what they ended with.  It was actually back in 2007 that they brought it on the market at $555K and then what happened?  Well, the market promptly went to hell in a handbag and there they were with quality homes being built in a soft market, to put it lightly.  I really do think it was the quality of Zetterberg homes that got the job done. They have a solid reputation and if you had a chance to walk through this home, it showed like a model.  At 2,724 square feet, this 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home shines!  The extras are literally too numerous to list. Just suffice it to say that they’re all in there.  So, at a time when a lot of builders are giving them back to the bank or selling for a loss AND really struggling to get any new home inventory sold,  this Zetterberg ended up closing at $496K and that ain’t bad…not in this market.

Well, the days of dry 70 degree days may be coming to an end just as school  is, too and Yes, the timing of those two couldn’t be worse but the clouds will make their deposits and we’ll hopefully get right back to what was shaping up to be a great summer in University Place.  bird You’ve heard me drone on before about getting the kids outside, away from the TV and getting them as active as we can.  Yesterday, our two grandsons were over and while their Mom and Dad were busy helping get some things done at the house, the two little guys got a bit bored.  Solution #1, build a birdhouse. No, in fact build a bird hotel!  Evan called it the Bird Inn.  That accomplished several things and then they still had energy. So, while Evan was off investigating something “interesting” we found his twin brother Ethan up a tree. Yep, just sitting up there, thinking and watching the summer afternoon going by.  You could say a lot of things about an eight year old boy up a tree on a Sunday afternoon but I would just say…PERFECT!

Have a great week. Catch you again Wednesday.

WHEW! What a week!

What a week for the RAINIERS, as well. It started off dismally with back to back losses to Las Vegas (0-4 and 8-10 following their opening win (9-2) on Saturday. So, to even up the series, the Rainierspulled out the final game in a Tuesday win 6-3. On the road Wednesday brought them to their next four-game series in Sacramento. They took the opener against the River Cats Thursday 6-4 then Friday night Sacramento turned the tide witha 3-2 victory against Ryan Rowland Smith and the Rainiers. Two more games are scheduled in Sacto. Then Monday night, you can catch the boys in a televised game at the Portland Beavers. That’s Monday at 7pm on the Fox Sports Net instead of the Mariners who’ll have Monday night off. And in case you are interested, the current weekend series against Sacramento is available on On Demand TV.

Our friend, buddy, love-interest the WEATHERMAN is staying in our good graces with a forecast calling for partly cloudy skies and temps in the mid ’70’s…darned near perfection! I don’t even see any showers in his forecast until next Friday. Could this be the same guy who called for such an elongated season of crud, this last winter? Well, of course it was his fault! But he gets the credit now and we’re lovin’ the guy!

Hey! The sale is Saturday (6/13) at the U.P. Library. Books and stuff, 10am to 4pm. The Library uses the proceeds for their special activity programs and I understand some good deals are to be found!

What an amazing group of kids we have here in U.P. I mean to say that we were so very impressed with the hundreds of Kindergarten-through- fourth graders who participated in the Design Day for the new Playground By The Sound (PBTS)on Thursday. Designers went to all of our Elementary schools that morning to host back-to-back sessions of students, many of whom came armed with their prepared artistic renderings representing their input, their ideas for the new playground and before the day was over, our professional designer from Ithaca, New York had combined the oft-repeated highlights into an amazing design for the new playground. My personal experience was at Chambers Elementary where they students were not only interested but well behaved, attentive, enthusiastic and communicative (By the way, why do little kids whisper? I swear they’re afraid to speak up.)…they represented their imaginative ideas clearly. They had been given more than a fair degree of thought. Kudos to the teachers, parents, principals and everyone involved in making sure our youngsters had their say in this future project in their community. The steering committee behind the PBTSwas in a bit of a dawn-to-dust mode that day and many found out how exhausting the effort was going to be. OK, I’ll admit, I was whipped after two hours of intense sessions withthe kids. But the final design was well worth it. So, what’s next? Well over $100,000 still needs to be raised to make this all happen next Spring. Personalized fence pickets are being sold, donations being rustled up and much more planing and execution is underway. Additional volunteers are needed in support of a wide variety of preparatory activities as well as the multi-day build. Interested? Well, the easiest way to get involved is to respond to this blog. That’s right. Just reply withyour comment telling us who you are and how we can reach you and we’ll follow up. It’s a huge undertaking but the payoff will be well worthit. And by the way, it’s a rather green project, as well, using recycled materials throughout the structure. We’ll continue to keep you posted as this wonderful community building project unfolds but now IS the time for you to get involved in what is actually amounting to a lot of fun with some very, very good people!

Something is eating the garden!  No, it’s not slugs. My wife is a notorious slug murderer. She’s got that well covered. It’s something bigger. Yes, we have a population of squirrels in our yard roughly equal to the population of India but I’m pretty sure it’s not those bushy tailed critters unless they can use a chain saw. Whatever it is, it’s much bigger.  It just took down two corn stalks!  See what I mean about bigger.  I suspect rabbits.  I don’t see dogs or cats interested in chewing up the dahlias and gnawing at corn stalks until they surrender.  So, it was off to my local wharehouse store to wander through their aisle of repellants.  And repellants is a polite word.  They have concoctions of destruction and fear suitable for everything from cockroaches to deer!  They’ve got powders that promise to eradicate aphids. They’ve got stuff that will strike terror into the heart of any skunk. They’ve got… They’ve gotrabbiteverything. Everything, that is, except what I went looking for.  I was lectured the other night that what I really needed was (Oh, you’re gonna love this!) concentrated, dried coyote urine.  ( You just can’t make stuff like that up. )   And the guy who told me about it, swears by it. (Who gathers this stuff?  I thought I’ve had bad jobs!)  He promises me that it not only drove out all of the neighborhood pets but it also made his yard totally free of mice, squirrels, rabbits, racoons, possums and apparently it even drove off his first wife!  “Wow!”, I thought, “That IS good stuff!”  So, I went looking for it only to be told that the only place they knew that carried it was the good old Duffle Bag, which, of course, closed it’s doors forever, last year.

So, I left the mega-box store with a bag of fertilizer. I know, I know… I went looking for repellant.  Well, apparently, it is.  I had a bag of something called blood meal. What is blood meal? I can’t really tell you other than to say that it’s made from animal blood and other animals apparently hate the stuff and they stay away. The package states, multiple times, that mine is not from cows but does it ever tell you what it’s from? Nope. ( Unless, well, does “porcine” mean pig? ) Meanwhile it supposedly replenishes the necessary supply of nitrogen in the soil.  Then, if you stop by, what I call, the “Big Cheap Store” and you buy a container of Cayenne Pepper… we’re talking more Cayenne than you would ever use in one kitchen in your entire lifetime, but what they heck, it only cost a buck!  You get home, mix the Cayenne into the Blood Meal and then go sprinkle it around your garden, supposedly, the critters are gone for at least a month!  They damned sure better be gone because the guy who told me about it was right. My wife is also gone.  Apparently, no matter how much hot water and soap you use, the rather offensive stench of blood meal does not come out of your hands no matter what.  The last I saw my wife, she was muttering something about the guest room or the RV. So, I would advise anyone wanting to apply the above concoction to try a disposable plastic glove.  Unless of course you actually want….  Oh, never mind.  I’ll let you know if the offending critter returns.  No, I don’t mean my wife!

Speaking of good people, the candidate statementsare rolling in. You’ll recall that after the close of election filing, I invited the candidates for City Council, to submit up to a 250 word campaign statement and photo by next Wednesday (6/17) and we’ll run them for you to examine, soon after. Several of our candidates have done so and I look forward to getting those in front of you in preparation for the upcoming elections.

Have you seen the concentration of work going on at the new town center, lately? While construction continues on several facets of the project, the contractor has been scrambling to complete the area which will be called MARKET SQUAREin front of the New City Hall and Library. A state grant is funding the near $1M project and it’s designed to serve as a public plaza, outdoor multi-use area for events throughout the year. Now, while it won’t be open for daily use this summer as it’s still in the heart of a major construction area, a dedication event is fast approaching. When the project is about complete the city will announce it’s plans. The center really is set aside as the heart of the overall project and it contains not only the site and setting for the city Christmas tree but it’s got a children’s spray fountain for summer fun, as well. Trees, lawn, fire pit…the design is quite varied and if similar “central park spaces” in other recent city developments across the country should tell us anything, it’s bound to be a well used area. One of my favorites is the one in the Denver area surrounded by retail, restaurants and second story offices. It features a lawn and stage for open-air performances and I watched it in use last August while we dined in an open-front restaurant while a live band entertained from not a half-block away and hundreds of “picnickers” feasted on their casual meals on the grass while enjoying the show. What a sense of connected community! What a cool idea and, in reality, how very, very practical. Our Market Square will be unique in itself and we’ll learn how best to make it come to life all in good time. But the word is, it will soon be finished and dedicated. We’ll let you know.

americanflagAs the last week of school is upon us, so to is FLAG DAY, this Sunday 6/14. Remember all of the campaign “bull” about Barack Obama not pledging allegiance? Well, here’s a good way to put that all to bed. On Thursday, President Obama officially declared Sunday to be Flag Day and the week following to be Flag Week during which he directed the displaying of the flag on all federal government buildings and he urged all of us to observe the day and week by flying our colors at home and other suitable places and by publicly reciting the pledge of allegiance. Do you have your colors up? Do your children understand what it’s all about? Should we leave that lesson to the schools? No! Where should our youngsters learn what it means to be an American? With their teacher or with Mom and Dad? Here’s a good opportunity to explain another facet of what it all means. A good Flag Day and Flag Week to you and yours!

SALE OF THE DAY: In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place here’s another recently sold U.P. home with details from public information.  SOLD:  5421 89th Ct West.  After 389 days on the market, this nice tri-29021005level home featuring 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2,168 square feet on almost a half acre lot is now sold.  Three different REALTORS handled the home for over a year and finally, the asking price got reasonable and low and behold, there was the buyer!  It wasn’t that the first two agents weren’t any good. Nor was it that they weren’t doing what it took to sell the home.  The price was too high!  It was really that simple.  They started at $375K and finally, when they price got to $339K, they accepted an offer of $324K and it was done.  But when it sells at $324k you’ve got to know that $375K was a waste of everyone’s time.

Well, let’s get out there and enjoy. Yeah, I know, it might be “enjoying” the yard work or it might be “enjoying” painting the house or it might …  whatever… it’s outside, it’s great out there and we’re not depressed and complaining ’cause it’s wet and gloomy. Plus I just noticed last night that I’ve got red strawberries in the garden!  I love summer!  See you Monday.

——————————————————————————–

Well at this writing, (4:30 pm) it’s 86 degrees outside and I have completely forgotten how miserable last winter was!  But HEY, Thursday looks potentially crazy!  How about 88 degrees, 20% chance of precip AND a chance of Thunderstorms!  Ah, the summer storm. It reminds me of being on a beach, walking in the summer chancetstormsrain while the temps were near 90…what a sensation. Well, let’s see what Thursday brings. Beyond that, the WEATHERMAN says a bit of cooling and increased cloudiness is approaching with forecast highs looking like 70 Friday and in the upper 60’s for the weekend parade and garage sales. Not bad.

Speaking of bad…no, no, no… not really the case. Our RAINIERSdid finish the visit to Colorado Springs with yet another loss on Monday but it was a real slugfest witha 13-12 final. (I heard the pitchers were both visiting T-Ballersbut I can’t verify that.) Hey, they came home and came back against Reno on Tuesday with a 5-1 victory and they look to repeat tonight at 7pm. The Aces are here through the Friday night FIREWORKS and then it’s back on the road for our boys to Las Vegas. Actually, they’re on the road for almost two weeks. We’ll keep you posted. They’re currently 3.5 games back from division leading Colorado Springs and the RAINIERS current record is 28 and 24 which is better than the Mariners, of course, who are currently 6 games back with a 25 and 28 record. Yes, the FIRST number is the wins!

OK So, what’s happening around here this weekend?  Tons but lets hit the highlights.

Saturday is DUCK DAZE and all that entails.  Yep, duck tails, costumes…the parade which starts at 10am at 27th and Bridgeport and heads south to 37th and Homestead Park where the Treasures in the Park will also be underway.  Don’t forget the day-long Open House just next door at the Public Safety building where you can stop in and see our Firefighters, their equipment and you can stop and thank our Police officers for their nice work as part of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department which made arrests this morning, less than 24 hours after the Walmart shooting!  It’s nice to have that level of expertise protecting you and yours, don’t you think?  Saturday will be a good day to stop by and thank them for what they do and it’s always the right time to thank a firefighter!

While you’re in the park Saturday, look for the PLAYGROUND BY THE SOUND boothwhere you can sign up to be a part of the team that will actually build the 1200 square foot playground that our kids are actually designing.  There’s lots of ways to get involved in this project which will come to fruition next summer but NOW is the time for your youngsters to submit their design ideas and they can do that with a visit to the booth this Saturday. Yes, they can sit down and draw the idea they want incorporated into what will become THEIR playground.  The project itself will be surrounded by waist high fencing and each fence picket can be dedicated PBTS_Logoto, oh say that youngster of yours or your family or your company or you or whomever you want memorialized at the playground for all to see.  It’s a good straightforward way of raising funds for this huge undertaking.  What I’m saying is you can stop by the booth and “Buy a Picket” and have it inscribed as you want.   No kidding.  It’s just one more outside of the box idea being incorporated into this community project. Stop by, see what’s going on, ask your questions and have your little guy or gal get their ideas on paper so they can be considered by the professional designer who will be here next Thursday 6/11 in the primary schools doing just that, soliciting their design ideas.  Will your youngster be included in that?  Make sure they have their voice heard. Stop by the booth in the park on Saturday and, of course, don’t miss all of the entertainment, food and “treasures” there.

Remember me telling you about the performance this Saturday scheduled for MERIDITH CONNIE?  She is the very talented (And very educated) classical guitarist who teaches our kids through UP Parks and Rec.  Well, she’ll be performing Saturday at 2pm at the Pierce County Library at 13718 Pacific Avenue in Spanaway.  She is not only a gifted musician but a very warm and nice young lady who instills the roots of a true love of music in our boys and girls, right here.  I’m sure they would enjoy catching the “other side” of their music teacher, in action and you have to know Meridith would get a real kick out of seeing them, as well.  (Psssst….and the thing is, she’s really, really good!)

Well the filing is well underway for the University Place City Council races coming up. As of this afternoon, here’s what the contests look like:

Position #1:  Incumbent – Mayor Linda Bird     Challenger:  Javier Figuroa

Position #3: Incumbent – Councilmember Lorna Smith     Challenger:  Eric Choiniere

Position #4:  Incumbent – Councilmember Ken Grassi     Challenger:  Carl Mollnow

Position #5:  Incumbent – Councilmember Stan Fleming (Not yet filed)   Challenger:  Rose Ehart

Candidates have through this Friday 6/5 to file for the election.  We’ll give you a wrap up in our weekend edition and we’ll pursue all of the candidates for their statements.   If you have thoughts on this year’s election we would certainly like to hear them.

And the business event this week is the Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Showcase Thursday 6/4 in the Environmental Services Building at the south end of Grandview from4:30 to 7pm.  It’s an opportunity for area businesses to show their stuff whether they have a storefront operation, a home business or whatever!. Food, drinks, entertainment…yes, there is an admission fee but just the giveaways alone should be worth that.

GARAGE SALES:  I’m sure I’m missing some neighborhoods but the bigger ones set for this weekend will be found Fri and Sat in Woodlake off Chambers Creek Rd.  Then Saturday it’s sales galore in Woodlake, Vintage on Bridgeport and in Westhampton off 54th west of Bridgeport.  DRIVE CAREFULLY!!!  Watch out for the little ones. They live here!

SALE OF THE DAY:  In an effort to help you keep tabs on this continually changing real estate market in University Place  here’s another recently sold UP home with details from public information.    Instead of a recent sale, let’s look at an actively available home in the heart of University Place and how it came to be where it is, today because this speaks volumes about our current marketplace.  gulish Kitch

Just barely three years ago an exceptionally nice family bought this large (2,751 sq ft) 5-Bedroom, 2.75 Bath home on  almost a quarter acre in the low traffic U.P. neighborhood known as Twin Hills.  Built in 1979 it’s been well maintained and updated in the right places.  The back yard is fenced and very usable with a big toy ready to go and an entertainment sized deck wide open.  Two particular spaces are just huge in this roomy home. The Living Rm-Dining Rm combo is really big with a nice fireplace at one end and large windows bringing in plenty of light. Then downstairs there is an equally huge Rec Room with another nice fireplace and more big, bright windows.  Big furniture?  Need a large family environment?  Want space for a big home theater…you name the need and I’ll bet there’s room for it here.  Evergreen Primary and Drum Intermediate are the wonderful neighborhood schools.  The owners have been relocated to the east coast and this is a must sell property.  Well, they bought it for $390K just 3 years ago and in a real statement of what’s happening in this market, the current list price was just dropped this week to $340K!!!  Can you believe that!?!   Somebody is going to STEAL this house.  And actually there is nothing wrong with that. I mean, the market is what it is. Homes are offered at prices where they will sell.  A seller may loose, a buyer may win but in the long run the markets come full circle and life goes on.  If you know someone who would like to walk through this wonderful home, give me a call at 682-1182. It’s open this Sunday from 1-4pm at 6913 Twin Hills Drive West between Bridgeport and 67th.  Watch for the signs.

Well, it’s time for me to get back to the office.  Between Open Houses to plan for, the Business Showcase to prep for, Saturday in the Park to be available for and I thought I was gonna take a night off to play music with friends…Ha!   Hey, the kids are almost out of school!  Are you ready for ’em?  They’ll be excited and aching for something fun and new.  Check out the city website and see what Parks and Rec has planned. Registration is underway for a LOT of cool activities, they’re bound to find one they like.  The website?  It’s one of those over on the right side of the page.  There really are some interesting ones there.

Have a great week. See you again as we climb into the weekend!
